Audio to Midi: Guitar to Piano

An audio to midi converter is the perfect solution for accessing all the virtual instruments that require you to be a keyboard player. It’s now easier than ever to play piano sounds, synths and even drums on your guitar. If the guitar is your primary instrument, you may find this the easiest solution for triggering sounds that you could not before, unless making use of an expensive midi guitar system.

Midi Guitar 2 is a polyphonic audio to midi plugin. You can download the demo version here. There’s also a version for bass. Once you’ve downloaded, open the plugin and click “Help” in the top right corner. It’s got a quick walk-through guide, the best I’ve seen in a plugin,

I started out by triggering the Yamaha Motif through Kontakt. The response is very impressive. Apart from the occasional glitch, it’s easy to recreate the sounds that you really like with a great level of dynamic range. By activating a piano sound, you can really test your knowledge on the fretboard as it forces you to think in terms of the harmonic context of that particular instrument.

On a deeper level, the plugin essentially allows you to do more with your guitar than just clean and distorted sounds. You can explore a large quantity of other instruments including brass sections, flutes and pads. This forces you to start learning and understanding these instruments without actually having to own and play them. And you will have the ability to add them to your recordings, too.

If you don’t own a bass guitar, you may find it helpful to record bass parts by using a midi plugin like MODO BASS. Simply load up the audio to midi conversion and you’re good to go.
