Revisiting Nick Jonas’ Guitar Solo at the ACM Awards

You may recall Nick Jonas being torn apart by online critics earlier this year due to a failed attempt at a guitar solo. The performance involved Nick Jonas joining Kelsea Ballerini for a joint performance at the ACM Awards on April the 3’rd. During the performance of her new song “Peter Pan”, Nick was given the responsibility of a guitar solo which didn’t quite go as planned.

Let’s take a look at what some people had to say about it. This particular author had a field day:

“Nick Jonas perfected the most aggressively shitty guitar solo ever played on any awards show or other live television event in the history of ever. It sounded like cats screwing while being electrocuted. I mean this thing was a musical abortion, which begs the question, why on Earth is this pipsqueak even on the stage of the American Country Music Awards in the first place?”

Now, let’s take another look at the guitar solo…

Let’s look at this practically for a second. The first thing I noticed is that the backing band is pretty impressive (not sure who they are?) All in all, the audio quality is quite impressive and the vocals are definitely in place. Nick’s guitar sound is good, and his choice of notes (or attempted notes) aren’t bad at all. Whether he wrote the solo himself is a question that remains to be answered.

With that said, I consider myself a professional guitar player and I can definitely pull off an entire show without making a single mistake. However even I have had worse mistakes than this. Mistakes happen. I’m pretty sure Nick Jonas is very hurt about the whole thing.

So what can we learn from this? If you’re a well known pop-icon, don’t make a mistake on a guitar solo.
