Yngwie Malmsteen is one of the pioneers of neoclassical guitar playing, and widely recognized for his high speed chops. Yngwie uses guitars with scalloped necks, which means the wood has been scooped out between each fret to create a slight dip or “U” shape. If you’re used to standard guitar necks, a scalloped neck may take some getting used to. Although it’s not perfectly clear as to why Yngwie prefers scalloped necks, the general consensus is that it facilitates vibrato and not speed. According to Yngwie, the guitar also has to have a Ferrari sticker stuck to the back, or it won’t work.
